1.Introduction

1.1 History and Origins of Ikukunitama Shrine
Ikukunitama Shrine is an ancient shrine located in Tennoji Ward, Osaka City, and is said to be one of the oldest shrines in Osaka. Its founding is said to date back to Emperor Jimmu’s eastern expedition.

Originally, it was enshrined at the northern end of the Uemachi Plateau, where Osaka Castle now stands, but it was moved to its current location when Toyotomi Hideyoshi built Osaka Castle. Even afterwards, during the Edo period, it was sometimes referred to as the “Ichinomiya of Settsu Province,” attracting the faith of the imperial court and samurai families, and was affectionately known as “Ikutama-san” by the common people.

Noh theater and festivals were also actively held there, making it a historically significant shrine that developed as a center of Osaka’s culture and faith.

1.2 Role as the Guardian Shrine of Osaka
Ikukunitama Shrine, as its name “Ikukunitama” suggests, enshrines the “soul of the nation = the god who protects the land itself.” Therefore, it has been cherished since ancient times as the guardian shrine protecting all of Osaka.

Osaka has been a vital transportation and economic hub since ancient times, and the faith of Ikukunitama Shrine has supported its prosperity. In particular, Osaka merchants during the Edo period visited the shrine to pray for business success and family prosperity.

Even today, it remains an indispensable place of worship for local people, and is a beloved shrine visited at important life events such as New Year’s visits, festivals, weddings, and prayers for protection against misfortune.

1.3 Origin of the Deities and Blessings of Ikukunitama Shrine
The main deities of Ikukunitama Shrine are:
・Ikushima-no-Okami
・Tarushima-no-Okami
These two deities are gods of land creation and preside over the stability and prosperity of the land and the protection of people’s lives. Therefore, worshippers are believed to receive blessings for “warding off evil,” “bringing good fortune,” and “national peace and security.”

Furthermore, there are numerous subsidiary shrines within the grounds, offering blessings for a wide range of life needs, including:
・Matchmaking and romantic fulfillment (Tsuru-no-Mori Inari Shrine)
・Safe childbirth and fertility (Koyasu Shrine)
・Business prosperity (Shigino Inari Shrine)
・Academic success (Tenmangu Shrin
